For years, I navigated the demanding world of higher education as a single mother—experiencing it as an employee, a student, and, as the parent of a college graduate. My journey was one of passion, perseverance, and a deep-seated belief in the transformational power of education. I saw firsthand the dedication of students striving for a brighter future and the tireless efforts of faculty and staff trying to guide them. But I also saw the persistent questions, the anxieties about life after graduation, and the sometimes-jarring disconnect between academic achievement and career preparedness.
That is why my path eventually led me to PeopleGrove. Here, I found a mission that resonated with every fiber of my being: to ensure every learner has access to the guidance, connections, and experiential learning opportunities needed to navigate their unique career journey successfully. It is not just a job; it is a continuation of the commitment I have always felt towards student success, now amplified by a platform designed to make a tangible difference.
A recent article I read from Inside Higher Ed, titled “25 Stats for 2025 Graduates,” undoubtedly underscores the urgency of what we at PeopleGrove do.
The noted article and other recent reports repeatedly emphasize the increasing demand for practical experience, soft skills like communication and problem-solving, and the ability to articulate the value of one’s education in a real-world context.
This is not a new challenge, but it is one that requires innovative and scalable solutions. My years in higher education showed me the limitations of traditional career services models, often stretched thin and struggling to provide individualized support to a diverse student body. As a single parent, I intimately understood the value of time, resources, and direct pathways to opportunity – luxuries many students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, may not have.
This is where the power of a platform like PeopleGrove truly clicks. We are dedicated to bridging the readiness gap by connecting students with alumni and industry professionals for mentorship, informational interviews, and networking which is invaluable. These relationships demystify career paths, build social capital, and open doors. Also, internships with firsthand experience are no longer a “nice-to-have” but a “must-have.”
The trends are clear: employers are seeking career-ready graduates. Higher education institutions are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the return on investment for their degrees, not just in terms of academic knowledge, but in tangible career outcomes.
My journey, from the front lines of academia to my move to PeopleGrove, has only solidified my belief that we must proactively equip students for the future of work.
For colleges and universities partnering with PeopleGrove, it is not just about adopting innovative technology; it is about embracing a comprehensive approach to student success. It is about ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or the challenges they face (and believe me, I understand challenges), has the support and resources to confidently step into their chosen career path.
The challenge of ensuring every student is career-ready requires bold, strategic initiatives from every institution. It is about moving beyond traditional methods to build a pervasive ecosystem of support that integrates career development into the entire student experience.
